Msgid: $RACESBUL.227
TO: ALL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCIES/OFFICES VIA THE ARS
INFO: ALL RACES OPERATORS IN CA (ALLCA: OFFICIAL)
ALL AMATEURS U.S. (@ USA: INFORMATION)
FROM: CA STATE OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES (W6HIR @ WA6NWE.CA)
2800 Meadowview Rd., Sacramento, CA 95832 (916)427-4281
RACESBUL.227 DATE: June 22, 1992
SUBJECT: MGT: Activation of a RACES unit. Part 3/3
- Hazardous material spill or incident.
- Rainfall/stream level observation and reports during a storm.
Severe weather observations and reports. (Prior training from the
National Weather Service is required.)
- ATV (Amateur Television) from the National Weather Service
forecast office to the EOC for periodic briefings during severe
weather incidents.
- Hostage situation. (ATV transmits high resolution color pic-
tures back to the EOC or law enforcement HQ for training pur-
poses.)
- Forest and wild fires.
- Floods.
- Point-to-point links during telephone outages.
- Interstate mutual aid missions: forest fires, etc.
- Landslides with long detours in remote areas: provide phone
patches for the inconvenienced motorists.
Almost any activity conceivable to the Radio Officer can be justified
to train the RACES members if the situation is approached and handled
in the right manner. Studied carefully and prudently, almost any
activity can be one in which a RACES unit can function, although
it takes effort by the RO and close coordination with the Emer-
gency Services Manager for the RACES unit in your jurisdiction.
Essentially, it depends on how it is handled and structured. For
helpful details, refer to Bulletins-By-Topic, print version
[available from State OES, Sacramento at cost; $10 check payable
to the State of California includes mailing expense.]
